FMP PRACTICE IN YEAR TWO

You have to put on a party

Context

Ambitions and clarify purpose

Eg. 20 people - how many people to invite - how many people do you want to come? 80s disco, nibbles, (soft) drinks, garage DJ, invites to x100, guest list, theme: 80s (etc), target audience

(Bring in some theory - narrative / issues / LGBT / gender / ethnicity)

Present?

Research

Range of relevant sources to support ideas

Eg. Locations, marketing, costs - budget, timing of the event, safety: research accessibility - can you get there? Accessibility: toilets,

Music: type, how will it play?

Lighting: power

Present - detail?

Problem solving

Decisive decision-making and initiative

Eg. create a plan with like each option and look at pros cons - make it clear what you decided and why

Plan B!

Planning and production

Detailed and coherent planning, continuous evaluation against aims, efficient production

Eg. using a Gantt chart, Simon daily lesson plan, compare work against what you planned

Practical skills

In depth understanding skills and knowledge demonstrated

(throw a party)

Evaluation and reflection

Maturity in decision making, clarity, perceptive analysis

Eg oh dear… there were these issues… but everyone danced! (except Nick)

Confident selection of ideas to an intended audience

Comparing the mark scheme with projects

Context-The music video starts of him in the classroom and then from the classroom it moves into a dream and we see him rapping in the corridor and outside. We will film someone rapping at the camera In each of our locations. Our ideas will progress through the music video when we change locations and go into the dream.

research-In the music video the artist represented as traumatised we can tell this by the lyrics and the emotion of the song.In the video they have focused on his face specially his mouth I think they have done this to to show that he is sad in the video.I don't think the artist is objectified in the video. The music video creator has focused on alot of headshots in this music video.I think this is because the music video is about someone being stuck in there head and they cant get he cant get her out of his head. Therefore they have done alot of headshots and also added the scene where his head is through the floor.

Problem solving-Based on your performance in the unit, what would you say is the biggest area that you need to work on individually to develop as a media practitioner? How did this negatively impact on your work?

I think that the biggest area I need to improve is editing. Although I enjoy editing it is a very hard skill to be good at I feel that I could have done better in the edits of the music video. If I was to re do this project I would have researched the effects I wanted to use and tried them before editing the video. This would have improved my final edit a lot because a few of the edits I wanted I didn't have enough time to add in.

planning and production-Producer

A producers job is to take control of the pre production side of the production The main tasks for a producer is to select the script; coordinating writing, directing, and editing; and
arranging financing

Production Designer
Production designers are responsible for the visual concept of a Music video. They identify a design style for sets, locations, graphics, props, lighting, camera angles and costumes, while working closely with the director and producer.

Cinematographer
cinematographer or director of photograph (also known as DP or DoP) is responsible for the development, look and feel of the images which make up the final film. Cinematographers work closely with directors, the camera crew and lighting department to get the right frame, lighting and mood for a film or TV programme.

Director
A directors job is to control the crew and make sure everything goes to plan. Some of the main key Tasks for a director is to cast the members of the crew and to oversee everything from the Pre-Production to the final edit.

The Role I think I am most suited to is the director. I think this because I will be good at Organising the plan and production

Minimalism

Minimalism is an abstract art form.In minimalism there is no intent of representing any reality.minimalist art doesn't have any further meaning to it then what you see.I think that this is very interesting because often you have to look very deep into a piece of art to really tell the story and understand it fully, however with Minimalism you don't have to do this research you can see what the artist is thinking without going into detail.

Qualities of the minimalism art movement

Aesthetically minimalism is very simple.I think that this gives the impression of minimalist art is very easy to create. This form of art is very versatile.

Minimalism in graphic design means that you only use the most essential elements including shapes and colour. Minimalism is an art movement that is a principle more than a style this is why it is less known than a movement like pop art.Minimalism has many roots these include The de Stijl art movement, Van Der Rohe and traditional Japanese Design. All these styles Remove any complicated design and are very simple.

Case study 1-Minimalism

Case study 2-Johnathan Barnbrook

Historical context Minimalism-

Minimalism arose in the 1950s with artists such as Frank Stella who's paintings were often Patterns This art form was created to bring new life into the art world because many artists found the recent art had become outdated. The development of this art form is due to conceptual art.Conceptual art is unlike any art seen before it can be anything and look like anything the reason for this is artists thought that the idea of the work is more important then the final object itself. One of the most influential and famous minimalistic art is from Frank Stella called Die Fahne Hoch.I really like this particular piece of art for Stella because the painting is actually meaningless and the whole concept behind the painting is the title which was the official marching song of the Nazis. This painting would have been painted whilst world war 2 was going on therefore this name would have been very contraversial.

Theoretical context minimalism-

Minimalism in graphic design means that you only use the most essential elements including shapes and colour. Minimalism is an art movement that is a principle more than a style this is why it is less known than a movement like pop art.Minimalism has many roots these include The de Stijl art movement, Van Der Rohe and traditional Japanese Design. All these styles Remove any complicated design and are very simple.

How might this Inform your practice?-This could influence my Fmp because I may decide I want to create a poster that has very strong emotional meaning therefore I could use the title as the main reason and concept behind the poster.Another way that I could include Minimalism into my fmp is by using a minimalistic background to a poster. The way that I would incorporate this would be by having an object that is the main focus of the poster and a background that is completely one solid colour.

Historical Context-Johnathan Barnbrook

Johnathan Barnbrook is a graphics designer who has worked with many famous people Including designing David Bowie's  album cover in 2002.Jonathan Barnbrook also designs fonts many of these fonts have emotional or controversial names. From looking at a lot of his graphics design work i have noticed that he uses a lot of coloured backgrounds.Another thing i have noticed looking at his work is it is very different to the normal things you see in graphics design he incorporates a lot of political and controversial topics.

Theoretical context-Johnathan Barnbrook

From looking at a lot of Johnathan Barnbrooks work I can see that he has very controversial views which he adds to his work making a lot of political points this makes his work seem very emotive.Another feature of Johnathan Barnbrooks work is that he uses text in a lot of different and new ways this is probably to do with his career in designing fonts.

How might this Inform your practice?-I think that Johnathan Barnbrooks work could influence my Final Major Project because of his controversial and political style however I do not want to make anything political or controversial but I would like to create a poster that conveys that much emotion by looking at it.I think that I could incorporate some of his work into mine especially the use of text.

Evaluation-

From reading all these sources I have found out a lot of information about minimalism and Johnathan Barnbrook. In source 1 it talks about the development and the history of minimalism whereas in source 3 they talk more about idevidual art and artists.Source 1 was very helpful when it came to learning about the historical and theoretical context whilst also giving information and some information about certain art and artists. In source 3 it talks a lot more about certain artwork this is very helpful for me to understand deeper meaning behind certain pieces of art but doesn't help me gain knowledge in the movement.

Source 4 is giving alot of information on the artist and what the artist has done but not alot of information on the actual art this helps you understand the artist which could be helpful.I think that source 5 however is alot more helpful for what I wanted to research this source was looking at each individual art piece and giving information on each. This really helped me learn about Johnathan Barnbrooks work and how his art was created.

Presentation of ideas

My FMP idea is to create a set of posters that have a wide range of design.I would like to create around 5 posters the reason for this is that I think that 5 posters would show the ability of different genres and effects. The main thing that interests me is creating a effect in photoshop, I love the creative freedom that you get from using photoshop.I will be using the research I have done to create some different styles of poster, for example I want to create a mimilistic poster using text as the main focus I also want to create a poster using the type of emotion that Johnathan Barnbrook uses in his work.I found out about Johnathan Barnbrooks style from during my research looking at this site Alfalfa Studio. (2016). The Graphic Design of Jonathan Barnbrook. [online] Available at: http://alfalfastudio.com/2016/12/13/the-graphic-design-of-jonathan-barnbrook/ [Accessed 28 Jan. 2021].This website is showing off his work and from looking at this I have concluded that his work conveys a lot of his emotions this is something that I would like the replicate. The way I see this project is to complete good quality practical work with good research to back up what has been accomplished. To conclude I think that my research will be highly successful because I am going to use the research from this project to get a higher quality project for my Fmp.

My FMP ideas

For my fmp I have many ideas and I think these will change over time.

In the Fmp I want to create a high quality set off 5 posters.
I want these posters to have emotion in them and I would like to connect with my work I think this will improve the quality of my final design.

In the fmp I want to create 5 different posters with 5 different genres and effects. These effects and genres will be what I will research during the fmp.I also want to research different graphics designers to see there style and create my own.
